THE BEAULIEU NATIONAL CAR MUSEUM: Continued... LAND SPEED RECORD CARS: 1960: BLUEBIRD: Built in 1960, Donald Campbell set a land speed record of 403.10mph (648.783kmh) on the 17th July 1964 at Lake Eyre, South Australia. Prior to the record, Campbell tested the car at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1960 and suffered a disastrous crash, subsequently the car was repaired and a rear tail fin was fitted. Bluebird was powered by a Bristol-Siddeley Proteus gas turbine engine rated at 4,100bhp.
