THE GARTERBELTS & GASOLINE - VINTAGE SOAP BOX DERBY, 2012:
The Vintage Soap Box Derby was held on Curtis Road at Mount Tamborine,
Queensland. An annual event, festivities stretched over four days.
THE PIT REPORT: The
Pits is my first stop at any race meeting and the Soap Box Derby Pit Row of 2012
confirmed significant design development in all categories compared to the 2011
Event, well done to all competitors.
PIT ROW:

'group shots'.
#10A: 'SWEET
SOHPIE': Influenced by World War 2 Aviation, note the
'winglet's' offering some degree of 'aero' at the axle line.
#14A: COFFIN
CHEATER: More than a passing resemblance to 'Grandpa's
DRAG-UL-A' from the Munster's television series, note the 'engine velocity
stacks' and the 'chain link' steering wheel.
#33: FULLY
ENCLOSED: Influenced by World War 2 Aviation and the
'Fighting Tigers', note the 'hub centre steering concept' and the 'aiming' cross
hairs.
#2040: 'ACES
HIGH': Influenced by Aviation and Dragsters, this entry
had a faithfully replicated steering wheel, fully functional braking chute and a
rather novel brake release mechanism in the form of an 'off-cut of DAR timber'!
Note the dual rear wheels with independently operated disc brakes! The only
concern I had for the driver was that the perspex hood was fastened down 'from
the outside'!
