1933: AUTO UNION GP CAR: Dr Ferdinand Porsche receives a contract to design the Type 22 Auto Union Grand Prix racing car.
1934: VOLKSWAGEN: Dr Ferdinand Porsche presented an expose to build a German 'Volkswagen' to the Reich Ministry of Transport on the 17th January 1934. On the 22 June 1934 he received a contract to design the 'Peoples Car' from the Reichsverband der Deutschen Automobilindustrie (RDA), the Association of the German Reich and Automotive Industry. 1935: VOLKSWAGEN: Volkswagen prototypes successfully pass an endurance test of more than 50,000km. 1937: Planning starts for the future Volkswagen Plant in Wolfsburg, Fallersieben.
1939: THE PORSCHE TYPE 64: Dr Ferdinand Porsche carefully guided the development of the Type 64 throughout 1938~1939. The vehicle, based on the Volkswagen, was originally developed to race in the Berlin-Rome Endurance Race but the Second World War ensured the Type 64 was never raced. What it did achieve was to confirm Porsche's enduring legacy for car design, including light weight and an aerodynamic profile to minimise drag. The Type 64 was clearly a prelude to the 'Type 356' developed by Ferdinand's son, Ferry. 1944: Following heavy air raids in Stuttgart, the Design Office is moved to Gmund, in the Austrian region of Carinthia.
1948: THE PORSCHE TYPE 356: The first car bearing the exclusive name of 'Porsche' is manufactured. Designed by Porsche's son Ferry the 'Porsche 356' clearly defined the direction the Porsche family would take with Sports Cars. MORE PORSCHE: Please continue by selecting from the following pages...
