THE NSWGR MUSEUM - GOODS ROLLING STOCK EXHIBITS: My coverage of the NSWGR Rail Museum Goods Rolling Stock.
1854: (L743 JIB TRUCK), 1884: (L1327 CRANE): BREAKDOWN CRANE: The oldest exhibit at the Museum, specifically the 1854 Jib Truck. Imported from England in 1884, the Crane was constructed by Cowans, Sheldon and Company, Carlisle, England. L1327 is considered a compact design allowing one (1) operator to lift massive weight, reality records the fact that Operators considered the Breakdown Crane a hernia maker! The Jib Truck was manufactured in 1885 with parts from Truck A1, the first Sydney Railway Company Truck which dated back to 1855. Truck A1 was originally manufactured by Wright and Sons, Birmingham, England in 1854.
1950's: BCH32259: BOGIE BULK COAL WAGON: A hybrid of English and German sourced components were utilized by Commonwealth Engineering, Granville, Sydney to manufacture 2,750 Bogie Coal Wagons. The BCH wagons had an unladen weight of 19 tons and a fully laden weight of 60 tons. BCH32259 was built with German sourced components and remains as an example of the original Bulk Coal Wagon configuration, numerous other examples were converted to BWH Grain Wagons serving for many decades.
1952: CHG16995: COAL TRAIN BRAKE VAN: A critical requirement to improve the braking performance of early Coal Trains, Brakemen operated the Brake Van in sympathy with the Locomotive. The underlying problem was the incredibly drawn out usage of 'non-braked' Coal Wagons well into the late 1970's in Australia. It was not uncommon for two Brake Vans to be attached to Coal Trains to improve barking efficiency.
