THE NSWGR MUSEUM - DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE EXHIBITS: My coverage of the NSWGR Rail Museum Diesel Locomotives.
1943: THE #7921 AMERICAN DIESEL SHUNTER - 'THE US ARMY CONSCRIPT': During 1943 the Australian Government approached the United States Army to provide Diesel Engines under a Lend Lease agreement to serve at the St.Marys, New South Wales, Munitions Factory. Four #79 Class General Electric, 44 Ton 'Switcher' locomotives were provided, two of which ultimately served at Sydney's Central Station for some time.
1950: THE #D1 DIESEL ELECTRIC SHUNTER: The first Diesel Locomotive manufactured in Australia. The #D1 was manufactured by Commonwealth Engineering, New South Wales, it incorporated English Electric electrical and mechanical equipment and the locomotive produced 750bhp. The locomotive was used for Shunting duties at Port Kembla, NSW.
1956: THE #4201 CLASS DIESEL ENGINE - 'THE STREAMLINER': The #4201 was represented by the #4306 during my visit to the Museum. The #4201 was delivered in 1956 bearing the title of 'Clyde Engineering' manufacture. The construction was a joint effort between a North American Manufacturer, (they provided the engine, generator and traction motors) and Clyde Engineering provided the body and frame.
1959: THE #4803 CLASS DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE: The #4803 locomotive was designed by the American Locomotive Company (ALCo), New York and manufactured by A.E.Goodwin, St Marys, New South Wales. The locomotive is powered by a single six cylinder turbo charged diesel engine driving a 950bhp rated generator, coupled to six traction engines.
