1937: THE FIRST AROUND THE WORLD
FLIGHT:
The first attempt to fly around the
world commenced at Oakland, California on the afternoon of the 17th March, 1937,
Amelia was the pilot accompanied by Paul Mantz, Harry Manning and Fred Noonan in
her Lockheed Electra 10E which had been modified to include long range fuel
tanks. The flight to Hawaii was uneventful, a new speed record for the crossing
of fifteen hours forty seven minutes was established. The aircraft landed safely
at Wheeler Field, Hawaii at 5.40am local time with a significant amount of fuel
in reserve.
Preparations for the take off from Hawaii were well planned,
Wheeler Field was deemed unacceptable as a take off location, given the nature
of the rough runway and the weight of the Electra 10E with replenished fuel
tanks. The Electra 10E was moved to Ford Island which offered a nominally 900
metre concrete runway. At 5.53am on the morning of the 20th March 1937 Amelia
commenced her take off, at nominally 300 metres along the runway the right hand
side tyre exploded and as a result the right hand side landing gear collapsed.
The aircraft spun around damaging a wing, the fuselage and more critically
perforating a fuel tank. There was a fuel leak but thankfully no fire and the
crew were able to climb out of the aircraft uninjured.
Amelia was quoted after the accident stating 'ten seconds more
and the plane would have been airborne', later that day she was on her way to
San Francisco on the SS Malola offering a further comment, 'I'll be back'. The
Electra followed for extensive repairs by Lockheed.
