November 2010, 'DEEJAY51' enters 'AREA51', well the public roads and tourist stop Little A'Le'Inn nearby at least. I visited Rachel, Nevada in the full knowledge that the alien part would be somewhat low key, the real surprise was the unique landscape and total silence along the road leading to Rachel from Las Vegas. I studied various websites devoted to Area51 prior to my trip to ensure I could at least find my way there, it's not exactly a secret, my trusty GPS was set to Rachel, Nevada and well it took me straight there! The overall trip between Las Vegas and the Little A'Le'Inn takes nominally three hours. THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL HIGHWAY: Sounds impressive, it's actually Highway 375 which is reached by firstly taking I-15 out of Las Vegas for nominally 35km then taking Exit 64 which leads directly onto US-93 heading north. Follow US-93 for nominally 140km, passing though the small towns of Alamo and Ash Springs, take the left turn onto Highway 318. Less than 2km along Highway 318 take a gentle left turn onto Highway 375, on the immediate right as you enter Highway 375 is the sign below. The tree shaded area next to the sign is apparently used by Area51 staff as a parking area, they then commute in a 'white bus' into Area51! Rachel and the Little A'Le'Inn are approximately 64km along Highway 375, note that there are various dirt roads leading off to Groom Lake, Mailbox Road and parts unknown along Highway 375, suffice to say I did not venture off the highway, this time! NOTE: The area surrounding Rachel is used by the nearby Nellis Air Force Base as a 'bombing and gunnery range' another important issue, if you intend to make the journey from Las Vegas to Rachel start with a full tank of fuel as there is NO fuel in Rachel. ON THE WAY TO RACHEL, NEVADA: Highway 375 certainly offers some unique scenery and the 'Alien Research Centre' which irrespective of the sign information outside the building and imposing 'giant alien guard' opens on 'weekends only'. Vegetation is restricted to Joshua trees and limited scrub, the traveller may come across the occasional cattle, note that there are very few stock fences, hence cattle tend to wander across the highway. THE ALIEN RESEARCH CENTRE:
UNIQUE SCENERY, JOSHUA TREES ETC:
RACHEL, NEVADA: With respect, do not expect a huge town at Rachel, Nevada. The town generally consists of the Little A'Le'Inn, a 'Motel', various low height structures and trailers.
NO ALIENS: Not quite, as part of my trip to Area51 I also travelled to the San Diego Air and Space Museum, to my amazement there was an 'ALIENS FACT OR FICTION EXHIBITION' on during my visit, and there were Aliens on show, woohoo...
