The 'Revival' delivered in the area of aviation in some very critical areas for me, I am a huge fan of all things Sir Douglas Bader and this is the first time I have seen a Memorial in Douglas' honour, Buzz Aldrin judging aircraft just huge (refer images of Buzz here), another flypast of the Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane and some risky looking dogfights. There just didn't seem to be the ceiling limit or rather the minimum altitude applicable at Goodwood as some of the dogfighting was very very low flying. GROUP CAPTAIN SIR DOUGLAS BADER CBE, DSO+BAR, DFC+BAR, FRAeS: I have read so many books about Douglas, viewed the film starring Kenneth More countless times, it was a humbling experience to stand beside a Memorial in Douglas' memory in the Goodwood grounds. I so wish I could have met the man in person. BATTLE OF BRITAIN MEMORIAL FLIGHT (BBMF): This was the third time I have had the privilege of witnessing the Avro Lancaster, Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane in tight formation, having witnessed fly pasts previously across Douglas Bay in the Isle of Man and at the the 2009 Biggin Hill Air Fair, an awe inspiring sight and sound! It is 'so appropriate' that these images follow on from those of the Douglas Bader Memorial.
NORTH AMERICAN P51 MUSTANGS: The Mustangs really put on a show.
1909 TYPE BLERIOT XI: This machine, on loan from the Brooklands Museum Trust, is a replica of the aircraft frenchman Louis Bleriot flew across the English Channel on 25th July 1909 winning the Daily Mail Newspaper prize of One Thousand Pounds for the first successful crossing of the Channel by air.
1919 TYPE VICKERS VIMY: This machine, also on loan from the Brooklands Museum Trust, is actually a 1994 replica of the 'Alcock and Brown' machine that they flew across the Atlantic Ocean in 1919 and 1920. On July 2nd and 3rd 2005 this replica re-enacted the same Trans Atlantic crossing, piloted by the late Steve Fossett and co-piloted by Mark Rebholz, taking incredibly by today's standards, nineteen hours. The aircraft's structure is mainly wood but it still weighs some 12 tonnes!
THE FUN PART: These 'Aviators' entertained the spectators every day, marvellous stuff.
