THE PHILLIP ISLAND EIGHT HOUR - PIT LANE PAGE 2: Two and a half hours into the race, at midday, my coverage continues...

#330:  YAMAHA YZFR1 - FNQ LAGER: (Pitted at 12.12pm) It should have been a totally demoralising crash for the FNQ Lager Team, the crash was the result of a failed front tyre valve! No way, the team worked as one to get the motorcycle repaired and back on track. A great effort.

#111:  DUCATI 848 - LA VIDA LOCA: (Pitted at 12.29pm) The motorcycle arrived in pit lane sans the fairing, it looked like the fairing had been torn off in a crash. A repaired fairing, duct tape number plate and a freehand '111' race number had the motorcycle sorted.

#18:  SUZUKI GSXR1000 - CUBE RACING AUSTRALIAN OUTDOOR LIVING SUZUKI: (Pitted at 12.51pm) Another Suzuki struck trouble with a rearset failure clearly the problem on this motorcycle was that the top link to the gearbox came away, possibly another pinch bolt problem?

#399:  YAMAHA R6 - TEAM IOVI: (Pitted at 1.08pm) Accident damage to the fairing, screen, slider and handlebar.

#83:  SUZUKI GSXR1000 - TEAM JP & K1 RACING: (Pitted at 1.12pm) The heavily taped fairing of the Japanese entry was holding together but the exhaust can bracket had cried enough. An improvised strap was used to remount the muffler. Note the obligatory tape role tool kit.

#22:  YAMAHA R1 - CZAJ RACING: (Pitted at 1.24pm) The dreaded rearset failure appeared to be contagious, beyond the realms of Suzuki Teams. This Yamaha R1 appeared to be missing a retainer on the gear linkage system.     #48:  KAWASAKI ZX10R - MICK MULDOON RACING: (Pitted at 1.30pm) Incredibly the axle simply would not go through the replacement wheel during a regular tyre change. The team resorted to a steel hammer to entice the parts to marry together!

#1:  SUZUKI GSXR1000 - TEAM SUZUKI: (Pitted at 1.39pm) The tyre change, refuel, discussions between riders, it all just seemed to flow perfectly.

#11:  SUZUKI GSXR600 - TEAM SUZUKI: (Pitted at 1.54pm) Similar to #1: the #11: team appeared to have no trouble with tyre changes, refuelling and certainly no rearset issues. Ben Attard is depicted above, watching the pit work. Phil Tainton advised me that he manufactures his own rearsets for competition, I noted the team's rearsets are stamped 'PTR', (Phil Tainton Racing).

#8:  SUZUKI GSXR1000 - WHITTNEYS 2 WHEEL WORKSHOP: (Pitted at 2.04pm) A regulation front and rear tyre change and there were concerns about the Suzuki's gear shift mechanism.

#83:  SUZUKI GSXR1000 - TEAM JP & K1 RACING: (Pitted at 2.11pm) A battered motorcycle, the International Japanese Team never gave up, here both rear tyres are being changed and the Team Manager, very much in control.

#18:  SUZUKI GSXR1000 - CUBE RACING AUSTRALIAN OUTDOOR LIVING SUZUKI: (Pitted at 2.15pm) The exhaust hangar required repair, I noted that the exhaust can had a hole in the canister, my later observations at 3.37pm confirmed my concerns. Rider, Bryan Staring looked on with concern.

#1:  SUZUKI GSXR1000 - TEAM SUZUKI: (Pitted at 2.20pm) A proverbial chink in the armour, no, just a precautionary top up of engine oil by Team Manager Phil Tainton. Rider, Troy Herfoss decided some neck exercises were in order, ouch!

#17:  TRIUMPH DAYTONA 675 - MITRONICS PRINT SOLUTIONS: (Pitted at 2.25pm) Another precautionary top up of engine oil, note that this team were the recipients of an opaque fuel container. It was not possible to view the actually fuel contents remaining in the container so they chose to time the refuel, hence the stopwatch, truly this must change.

#330:  YAMAHA YZFR1 - FNQ LAGER: (Pitted at 2.38pm) Determination, presentation, this team were not about to let the setback of a totally unpredictable valve stem failure impede their effort.

#68:  KAWASAKI ZX600 - WNR RACING: (Pitted at 2.40pm) Warwick Nowland, two time World Endurance Champion, was the Team Manager for #68:, so there was plenty of experience at the helm. The lower fairing required further attention and rider, Glenn Scott watched on with total focus.

#11:  SUZUKI GSXR600 - TEAM SUZUKI: (Pitted at 2.49pm) Another excellent pit stop by the team, tyre changes and a refuel.

#83:  SUZUKI GSXR1000 - TEAM JP & K1 RACING: (Pitted at 3.11pm) Another pit stop by the determined International Team, note the fuel handling and onset of exhaustion on the rider's face.

#18:  SUZUKI GSXR1000 - CUBE RACING AUSTRALIAN OUTDOOR LIVING SUZUKI: (Pitted at 3.37pm) A pit stop for tyres and then fuel. However I noticed the exhaust canister hole had increased and damaged the outer sheath of the rear brake line. A team member pulled the brake line away from the exhaust.

#11:  SUZUKI GSXR600 - TEAM SUZUKI: (Pitted at 3.40pm) Another possible proverbial chink in the armour, no, just another precautionary top up of engine oil, this time for the 600cc entry. One thing stood out very clearly with the Team Suzuki pit effort, the tyre changes were expertly undertaken, there were no axle alignment or spacer washer issues that hindered many other teams.

#1: AND #11:  TEAM SUZUKI: (Pitted at 3.42pm) Both Team Suzuki motorcycles were serviced here, the team appropriately had adjoining pit garages and not surprisingly all went as planned with no panic.

#330:  YAMAHA YZFR1 - FNQ LAGER: (Pitted at 4.06pm) Tyre changes, wheel alignment concerns and even more concerns on the riders faces.

#83:  SUZUKI GSXR1000 - TEAM JP & K1 RACING: (Pitted at 4.08pm) Another pit stop by the International Team, this motorcycle was battered and bruised but the team kept slapping new rubber on and refuelled it, excellent.

#99:  KAWASAKI ZX6R - WET 4U RACING: (Pitted at 4.11pm) A front wheel change that just would not happen for the team, they levered the pads back, tried so many angles but the wheel refused to marry with the forks and calipers for a long time.

#18:  SUZUKI GSXR1000 - CUBE RACING AUSTRALIAN OUTDOOR LIVING SUZUKI: (Pitted at 4.18pm) Another pit stop for tyres, this time the team replaced the holed exhaust canister.
