Marklin, without a doubt the world's greatest manufacturer of Model Railways started business in 1859 when the founder, Mr Theodor Friedrich Wilhelm Marklin began manufacturing miniature Doll's Kitchens in Goppingen, Germany. Soon the Company started manufacture of model railway systems releasing a clockwork (wind up) train set in 1891 complete with a figure 8 track layout. The landmark year was 1935, when Marklin released the first tabletop electric model railway system in HO gauge, as they say the rest is history. Marklin evolved into the undisputed premier brand of model railway systems.

My interest in Marklin products commenced in the late 1960's, moving from Hornby Dublo to my first Marklin 0-6-0 Tank Engine, a few basic carriages, an original M Track oval layout and a 'variac type' Marklin Transformer. Over the years I collected many specialised trains, rolling stock and moved to the K Track system, however I have not migrated to the Marklin Digital System (yet). I also moved out of Scalextric temporarily, purchasing my first Marklin Sprint Race Car Set soon after its release, sadly the Sprint Series was discontinued soon after. Marklin have always retained a very high standard in model railway systems alongside the likes of Fleischmann and Roco.

Sadly rumours turned to disturbing facts in 2009, Marklin filing for 'bankruptcy protection' in early February after failing to secure new credit from banks, this timing of course coincided with the 'global financial crisis' that we all seemed to become caught up in. Hopefully the company can continue.

As part of a trip to Germany in 2009 I 'mandated' a trip to the MARKLIN MUSEUM, location details Holzheimerstrasse 8, D-73037, Goppingen, Germany and to my amazement the trip coincided, almost to the day, with the One Hundred and Fiftieth (150th) Anniversary of Marklin!! The museum has a large Marklin layout, displays of current and classic Marklin items, a gift shop and of course Marklin Trains and accessories for sale!  My photographic records follow....
