Ballarat, GOLD, yes that did it. Gold was discovered in the Ballarat region in 1851, in less than twelve months some 10,000 Miners (diggers) descended on the area to make their fortune. A wonderful city evolved, offering heritage listed tourist attractions and a most welcome reminder of the cleanliness I witnessed in Bendigo, tremendous!! The following images depict some of the highlights of my trip there in 2009. I thoroughly recommend a trip to Ballarat! Avenue of Honour: Ballarat maintains a great deal of remembrance to those fallen and imprisoned in wartime. A fervent reminder to those that would ever again contemplate future wars of any persuasion.
Eureka Centre: The Centre is located at the site of the Eureka Stockade. On the 30th November 1854 Gold Miners took up arms against a corrupt and unjust Gold Fields Administration. A bloody battle ensued on the 3 December 1854, the outcome of which is credited with the birth of democracy in Australia. Referred to as a 'rebellion' the main focus was on levels of taxation applied, (sounds familiar), the rights of people to have a say in how they are governed, with fairness and 'a fair go for all'. It was the birthplace of Australia's spirit and the cradle of the countries democratic freedom. Some might say the 'struggle' continues!!
Lake Wendouree: The location for Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Events during the 1954 Melbourne Olympic Games, now a beautiful park like atmosphere surrounds the huge lake complex, very clean, very quiet, a beautifully maintained precinct.
