THE VIKINGS: A very interesting period in human history, during the eighth to the eleventh century Vikings set sail from Scandinavian waters and proceeded to terrorise, loot, populate and farm vast areas of Europe. My 'Viking Expeditions' have been somewhat less ambitious, so far they have been restricted to the Isle of Man, (House of Manannan and Viking Burial Site), and the Jorvik Viking Centre in York, England.
THE HOUSE OF MANANNAN: Located in the coastal city of Peel on the Isle of Man, the House of Manannan includes a beautiful display of a Viking Long Boat which has been strategically located with Vikings 'hauling the craft' to the waters edge, albeit restricted by the all encompassing glass exterior wall.
THE 'CHAPEL HILL' VIKING SHIP BURIAL: Located in Balladoole, Chapel Hill on the Isle of Man, a Viking Ship was excavated on the site in 1945. A Viking settler and a sacrificed woman, horse and other livestock were found. The burial site is high on a grassed hill overlooking vast areas of the Island. The Manx Museum has a scale model on display, representative of the site as excavated.
