AUSTRALIAN MOTORCYCLE, SCOOTER AND JETSKI EXPO - FEB'. 2012: It took two years for the Expo to return to the Gold Coast and it was well worth the wait. New Motorcycles, Scooters, Jet Skis and spectacular displays from the Mini Motos, ShowtimeFMX (Trials and FMX displays) and the JetPilot Waterzone Jet Ski show. The Expo was attended by some great Australian Riders including Troy Bayliss, Jason Crump and Stephen Gall. The stand out motorcycle has to be the Triumph Tiger 'Explorer', Triumph have entered the burgeoning Adventure/Tourer Market with a real winner, a very appropriate starting point for my coverage of the Expo. 2012: TRIUMPH TIGER 'EXPLORER' 1200: The motorcycle was flown in specifically for the Expo and it looked a treat. Powered by a 1,215cc three cylinder fuel injected engine driving through a six speed gearbox the motorcycle also features cruise and traction control, ABS and a hopefully maintenance free totally enclosed shaft drive. My only criticism centres around the huge muffler, minor matters are the possibility of top heaviness and the cleaning chores around that headlight area, a very busy mix of mouldings and fixings.
DUCATI DIAVEL 'CARBON': I like the look of this motorcycle, swoopy lines and plenty of street cred. The only criticism I have is the way the Termignoni Exhausts do not terminate following the line of the rear cast wheel. I am reliably informed that lack of alignment means the exhaust has to be removed to allow the rear wheel to be removed, incredible especially when one considers the exhaust costs AU$4,583.00 (February 2012).
1901: WEARWELL-STEVENS MOTOR BICYCLE: Released in 1901, the Wearwell-Stevens Motor Bicycle was powered by a two and a half horsepower, air cooled, four stroke engine with an automatic inlet valve and a mechanically operated exhaust valve. Other features included an accumulator ignition system, a twisted-leather belt drive to the rear wheel and a total-loss engine oil lubrication system..
BMW: The BMW Stand included a gorgeous R50/Sidecar and S1000RR (update if it was possible to improve the road version) a very attractive paint job on the venerable R1200GS and finally a BMW K1600GT and GTL at my Camera's mercy: 1955~1960: BMW R50 AND STEIB SIDECAR: Magnificent!
2012: BMW R1000RR: The updates are apparently very minor, external visual clues include revised fairing slots and the addition of 'bolt on' winglets.
2011: BMW R1200GS: The ever popular machine from BMW may be updated to water cooling 'soon'.
2011: BMW K1600GT: The Six Cylinder Masterpiece from BMW.
